This one ran where most software doesn't: on the factory floor. I was one of the developers on a .NET Framework application that managed and monitored Bridgestone's tire-retreading process, running on the hardware at each station along the line.
The work was the steady kind: features, bug fixes, database changes, keeping an application correct and available at a station where a stall stops the work in front of it. No heroics, which is the right setting for a system the floor depends on.
